SEAFARERS’ ETIQUETTE – WHO AND HOW WE ARE ON THE WATER

BY MARCELLO DESSì

Being part of the ancient family of men and women of the sea means accepting and adhering to a fascinating as well as practical world of conduct, rules, little adaptations and precautions that distinguish sea folk from country folk. In the ofttimes busy waters of the archipelago, the rules of precedence, safety and courtesy take on particular importance. At the end of the day, this handful of rules serve mainly to prevent accidents and avoid disturbing others, who have just as much right to enjoy a beautiful day on the water.

In the crowded anchorages of Pevero, Mortorio and our islands, true sailors can be identified on arrival by a well-steered boat that moves carefully and anchors at the proper distance from others. There is an absence of loud music and anyone shouting as if herding animals in the fields. As mentioned, the aim of the game is not to be a nuisance. Would Montalbano not curse those revving their jet skis while others are trying to sleep, or chat? And as we know, curses bring bad luck and sailors are a superstitious lot. So here is a the very minimum seafaring etiquette to avoid them:

Awareness: help others in all circumstances.
Ecology: do not throw rubbish of any kind into the sea.
Courtesy: don’t create wakes for other boats, especially near the shore.
Respect: a neighbour who doesn’t impose their blaring music or conversation on others is always appreciated.
